When it comes to decorating your home, there are several factors that come into play. It’s super easy to make a mistake here and there, but I have some tips to help elevate your design. These are common little things that can either really bring a home together or act as an eye sore, so we want to get it right!
Step 1: Rugs
I highly recommend adding a rug to all major living spaces to make the room feel more inviting and add contrast to the layout. However, it’s all about going big or going home for this tip. When choosing a rug, you want it to be almost flooding out of the room. It tends to create an awkward look when the rugs are too small for the space. In retrospect, you always want your rug to run underneath the legs of your main furniture.
Step 2: Drapes
Taking the time to add window treatments to your home always makes a space feel more put together. Not all windows are the same, and they should be decorated according to the flow of the rest of the room. The mistake I see most often is when drapes are not wide enough for a window or hung too low. Always try and hang your drapes a few inches from the top of the window to add some dimension to the walls and avoid the area looking two-dimensional.
Step 3: Rug Pad
This is a big one, and your feet will thank you for it later. You should start if you’re not already adding a rug pad underneath your area rugs. This not only helps the rug not move around as much, but you’ll also get much more comfort from them. Especially if you have hardwood or cement floors, the difference between having one and not is like walking on clouds.
Step 4: Decorating
When you are moving into a new space, it is always good to have an idea of where you want to lay out your decor. The biggest mistake I see is when people just place a little bit of something everywhere. You always want to pay attention to details, and instead of trying to add something to every corner, consider layering more. Taking this extra step to plan out your decor will make your space have a better flow and emphasize your design.
Step 5: Painting
Probably the most important tip I have is to paint BEFORE you move into a home with all your things. A lot of times, people try to do everything at once. They immediately start choosing paint colors, picking out curtains, buying art and then end up confused about how to put it all together cohesively. The paint color is the base of any room and figuring that out first will make your decorint process so much smoother.
I hope these decorating tips were helpful and you can keep them in mind for your next home. These tips are universal and great tricks to make any space look amazing! Let me know in the comments which one of these mistakes you see most often.
