Buying a new sofa is a big investment. For many people, a sofa is the most utilized and most expensive piece of furniture in their home! Whether it’s the big sectional in your family room where the kids cozy up for a movie night, or the elegant sofa in your formal living room where you gather with friends for a cup of coffee or a cocktail, you want your sofa to look elevated, but still feel comfortable and fit your lifestyle.

There are a few things everyone knows to keep in mind when searching for a new sofa. You want to make sure it fits the space, that you like the color, and that it’s from a high quality vendor. But what else do you need to consider before making this investment? I’m here to tell you!

Pick a cushion that matches your lifestyle, not just your comfort level.

An all-down cushion may sound luxurious, but they will need constant fluffing and flatten out over time. All-foam cushions are firmer and low maintenance, but they have a stiffer sit (which some people love, and some people find uncomfortable). High-density foam wrapped in down or fiber will give you a sofa that stays supportive, but softens the edges. If you have kids, pets, or just want low upkeep, lean foam-core.

Fabric choice should match real life, not just the mood board.

I can’t recommend performance fabrics enough. While it’s important to note that no fabric is entirely stain proof, performance fabrics are treated to resist spills and staining, giving you nore time to clean up the occasional spill or smudge. Performance fabric sofas are also more durable, making them a great choice for high traffic areas. If you have kids or pets, performance fabrics are a non-negotiable.

Yes, it does matter how tall you are when choosing a sofa.

Think about proportions. Seat depth matters more than people expect! 22 inches is an average depth, but if you’re a tall person (or just like to sit back with your legs up), look for 24+ inches. Arm height and back high change the whole feel, too! Low, wide arms read modern. Tall, tight-back styles feel more traditional.
