The right bedside lamp can elevate your bedroom from a nice room, to a beautifully designed sanctuary. You might think the only thing you need to consider when choosing a bedside lamp is if you like how it looks – and while that’s important, there are so many other things to consider. Let me walk you through it! After many years as a luxury interior designer in Westchester, I certainly have a thing or two to share. Make sure you read through to the end, where I link some of my favorite recent table lamps I’ve been sourcing for clients lately.

Get the proportions right.

Your bedside lamp should work with the height of your bed, and your nightstand. A common mistake is going too small (or too short) for the space. For a polished, dramatic yet elevated look, look for something close in height to your nightstand. For an average 24 to 28 inch tall nightstand, a 27 to 30 inch lamp works best.

Think about what you actually do in bed.

Do you like to read? Scroll? Wind down? Watch TV? Your lighting needs will be different depending on your routine. A directional sconce may be a great choice for someone who likes to read before going to sleep, while a lamp with a diffused shade creates a softer, ambient light that may work better for someone who likes to wind down and go straight to sleep.

Choose the bulb, not just the lamp.

I may sound like a broken record here, but your bulb choice is so important. Even the most beautiful lamp can create a harsh bedroom vibe if paired with the wrong bulb. Go warm, and soft. I always recommend 2700K – it gives a more relaxing glow.

If you’re trying to find the perfect lamp for your space, here’s a round up of a few of my favorites.
