A question I am often asked is, where should I splurge when furnishing my home? Let me break it down for you, and give you my best recommendations as an experienced interior designer who has furnished countless luxury homes in Westchester, New York.
Splurge on where you sit.
I always recommend a splurge on the places you sit and touch each day. Upholstery and seating like sofas, sectionals, or dining chairs are absolutely worth an investment! Cheap construction will show fast – cushions will sag, frames will creak, and fabric will pill. A well built frame will outlast two “budget” replacements and still look good in ten years!
Splurge on where you sleep.
Mattresses and bedding don’t sound like the most glamorous purchases, but sleep quality is a luxury nobody regrets investing in! Bedding is so personal, and you want to make your bed a place you look forward to snuggling into every night.
Invest in your counters and cabinetry.
No matter how beautiful the rest of your home looks, everyone always ends up in the kitchen!. Quality stone, solid cabinet boxes, and good hardware age well, and are worth the splurge, and will hold up to daily use.
Spend on statement lighting.
Entry, dining room, primary bedroom – all statement rooms where you’ll want to splurge on lighting. A great fixture sets the tone for the whole house, and is one of the first things people notice.
Don’t skip on window treatments.
Window treatments like custom drapery and hardware make rooms feel finished in a way that off the shelf panels never quite achieve.
