Things have been so fun lately here at Dwell & Oak – we’ve been busy in the best way with lots of installs, design meetings, and consultations. Summer is a popular time for families to move (everyone wants to be settled before school starts!), so I’ve been lucky enough to design some of the sweetest little girls’ rooms in their new homes!
I hear the same question all the time from my clients: how can I design a room that feels age-appropriate for young girls, but still feels classic and timeless, so they can grow into it? I’m about to share some of my favorite pieces that feel girly, whimsical, and fun, while still keeping with an elevated, sophisticated style that will last longer than your “typical” kid’s room. Happy shopping!
LIGHTING WITH TIMELESS WHIMSY
This lighting collection strikes the perfect balance between whimsical and timeless. The soft, scalloped edges and ruffled details (seen in the ceramic table lamps petal shade and the layered drum flush mount) bring a romantic, feminine softness without tipping into anything overly trend-driven or childlike. Natural textures like the woven rattan pendant, wicker domed wall sconce, and the flower petal chandelier add an organic charm. The mix of fluted ceramic, frosted glass globes, mesh, and wicker keeps the look layered and collected rather than matchy matchy, and the neutral color palette ensures the room can evolve with her taste as she grows. TIMELESS FURNITURE THAT FEELS FUN
Furniture with soft, rounded silhouettes feel gentle and appropriate for a young girls room, yet still sophisticated. A bed with a wavy or rounded silhouette can fit for an adult design style – it feels fun, but won’t feel babyish or out of place at 6 or 16. Rounded nightstands and dressers transition seamlessly from childhood to adulthood, and going for full sized pieces instead of smaller sized furniture ensures these items will last. One of my favorite touches is a vanity that can transition to a desk as they grow – for now, it’s perfect for storing hair ties and play jewelry, but one day will store notebooks and textbooks (and maybe a make-up bag or two). A few of my favorite pieces are linked on my LTK!

PERSONALIZATION THAT ISN’T PERMANENT
The most “child like” of the design elements we incorporate into a young girls room are usually the most impermanent – and that is intentional. Personalized name pennants, girly fun prints, and colorful switch plates all make the room feel fun and celebratory for kids, but can be swapped out easily for something more adult as they grow. I’ve linked some of my favorite fun accents on my LTK.
