I see it happen all the time – clients want a well designed closet, but keep making the same mistakes. A closet isn’t just about how much you can cram in there, it’s about how it makes you feel getting dressed every morning. Don’t be one of the people making the same mistakes over and over again – channel your inner designer, and take a look at my list of what to look for in a custom closet.

Drawers that are functional and beautiful.

Taking the time to select beautiful hardware will completely elevate your space. If you don’t love what your closet company offers, you can always look elsewhere and have custom hardware that you really love installed instead. We designers can’t divulge all of our secrets (otherwise known as our amazing trade vendors), but Rejuvenation is a great retail source for beautiful hardware, and you can always find something interesting to match a funkier style on Etsy.

Lighting that actually works for you.

In most larger closets, one overhead light isn’t going to cut it. LEDs inside drawers and doors, lights above hanging sections, and a mirror in a well lit location make getting dressed feel and look better.

Adjustable everything!

Your wardrobe will change over time, and you will want your closet to change with it. Remember when we were all only wearing ankle booties? Thank goodness you can adjust some shelves to fit those new knee high boots!

Accessories deserve their own space.

Drawers with jewelry trays, tie and belt racks, a specific shelf for sunglasses, and designated shelving for purses are so important. The small stuff like this is really what separates a well designed closet system from a nook where everything is just shoved into place.

Hanging space both tall and small.

You want to make sure you have space for short hangs, and long hangs. Short hangs are great for shirts, blouses, cropped jackets, and dress shirts, but you’ll need long hangs for longer winter coats, formal dresses, or long summer dresses that fill up half of everyone’s wardrobe (or is that just me?).
